Resumen
This thesis pioneers an effort to understand the contemporary Mexican society to know ourselves and try to influence in a successful way the reality we are living. The objective to reach is create a body of knowledge that allows a better understanding of the popular monuments that sanctify the urban public space of Mexico City and specifically of those altares callejeros that have had a poor study in contrast to their presence on the streets of the city. Its study is so scarce that this problem was added to the semantic uncertainty in which these popular monuments commonly called nichos are found.
The research question that gives axis to this thesis tries to find out why the current Mexican society constructs altares callejeros; therefore, a deductive analytical method should be used that could be reaffirmed and compared with the verbal answers given by the persons in charge of constructing them; Although these people, beyond verbalizing their motivations, they build altares callejeros, and it was necessary to carry out a multidisciplinary approach in different fields: Anthropology, History, Architecture, Urbanism, Political Science, etc.
The guiding thread of all this text has been the process of sacralization and profanation that has led to certain popular monuments throughout the history of Mexico City having been more or less successful; so the research question started from the need to know why the altares callejeros are so successful because of their number; This is how it was identified that the altares callejeros should be the current paradigm of sacralization of the public space of Mexico City and that these should be constructed, hypothetically, as the materialization of an idea of solution to an everyday uncertainty. This was proven by identifying at least one other society, such as in southern Italy in the 19th century, which had similar characteristics to build altares callejeros.
