dc.description.abstractThe airplane dynamics is by nature a nonlinear process, which can be represented as a rigid body with sometranslational and angular velocities and forces and moments acting on it. The control system for the flight dynamicsprimary consists on sensors which provide the information about the aircraft condition and atmospheric data; thenthis information is used to provide the commands for the control surfaces and engines, and feedback is incorporatedto assure a good tracking behavior and to reject disturbances such as wind gust and turbulence. The main functionof the control systems is to add safety and facility such thatthe flight missions can be accomplished.In this document it is presented the control of the lateral dynamics for a civil aircraft. The main concern incommercial aircraft is the performance of the airplane, that is, the capacity to reject the disturbances and the abilityto auto-stabilize to improve the quality of the flight.Different techniques have been studied and applied to the control of the lateral dynamics, some of them arenonlinear controller, LQG controller,H∞controller and the mixedH2/H∞approach. In this work the attentionis focussed in the design of a robustH∞controller based on the Mixed Sensitivity and Loop Shaping approach. Itis also considered the application of Linear Matrix Inequalities and Multiobjective Genetic Algorithms (MOGA) asan optimization tool applied to the problem ofH∞mixed sensitivity and loop shaping procedures. At the end thedifferences between these approaches are detailed.
