This dissertation develops new theory and techniques for DC-DC power converters interfacing renewable energies, specifically for converters classified as high-order based on their mathematical model, and thus generally more complex and difficult to analyze. The thesis encompasses the development of a new circuit topology, a control design focused on high-order dynamic systems, and the study of conversion systems between renewables and the utility grid. The dynamics of high-order converters present challenges for the stability and synthesis of controllers. By studying the nonlinear model of fourth-order non-minimum phase converters through zero dynamics, it has been established that some of these can attain stability under direct voltage at high regulation, in contrast to second-order converters. Controllers have been designed to take advantage of these results in order to remove the current sensing stage while still achieving high bandwidth voltage regulation. Research has also been conducted into creating novel DC converters with a lower component size than similar circuits. From this, an improved super-boost converter has been developed that requires lower energy storage on its capacitors and inductors than the traditional boost and fourth-order boost converters, for a given specification of input current and output voltage ripples. Additionally, an inverter system for a fuel cell stack has been developed using double-dual converters in cascade to increase the voltage gain and power handling of the system. Results from tests at different power and voltage levels show that the proposed system also achieves reduced switch voltage stresses and reduced output current ripples. Simulation and experimental results were obtained in order to validate the theoretical analysis. Mathematical models, steady state values and stability conditions were calculated, and prototype designs were developed to corroborate the performance of the converters, control and efficiency.

The development of a new generation of material has been of great interest in the ever-demanding industrial applications. This new generation of materials is required to be lighter, economical, and machinable with increased mechanical, electrical, thermal, and tribological properties. This work proposes the use of Nanotechnology as a development tool to overcome these demands. This work proposed the use of carbon nanotubes as the medium to enhance the electrical and thermal properties of the aluminum by the deposition of a nano coating of carbon nanotubes over the surface of the aluminum by an electrochemical process that modify the surface of the aluminum creating a thin film that enhances its physical properties. The samples produced by electrodeposition show an increment in electrical, thermal, and tribological properties. This results produced a new generation of nano-enhanced commercial aluminum that could be used for electrical applications. Finally, these results guide the first steps towards a scale-up EDP for industrial applications.

The application of additive manufacturing technologies in tissue engineering has been growing in recent years. Among different technology options, 3D printing is becoming popular due to the ability to directly print scaffolds with designed shape and has great potential like manufacturing method in the production of scaffolds for tissue engineering. Applications of additive manufacturing in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering are restricted for the available materials for each technology. A great part of the research has focused on the development of new materials to be used to create complex geometries, culture different kind of cells from a different types of tissues and applications. In this work, recent developed additive manufacturing techniques and biomaterials for vascular and bone tissue are studied. The objective of tissue engineering is to produce functional and viable structures and multiple biomaterials and fabrication methods need to be researched. To achieve this purpose, the fabrication of bifurcated vascular grafts using the combination of electrospinning and 3D printing, and the characterization of a new biomaterial for bone regeneration applications, were explored. Polycaprolactone (PCL) was used to electrospun a mandrel obtaining a bifurcated construct that was morphological and mechanical characterized. For bone regeneration applications, a new resorbable biomaterial was investigated. Process parameters and materials properties, such as separation force and green strength were studied in order to probe the printability of this material, compositional changes, or defects during the 3D printing process, of porous structures using Continuous Digital Light Processing (cDLP) and Isosorbide.

As it is known, the problem of availability of information is normally addressed using a buffer. Most of the times it is required that the effectiveness or reliability of the system is calculated to optimize the amount of stored information according to the customers random requests and to the amount of incoming information from the supply line. In this thesis, we consider the case of single buffer connected to any number of customers with bursty demands.
